Activities and Events:
During the first meeting we were warmly welcomed at the school followed
by a fantastic concert which covered many traditional Turkish dances, songs and
music. The importance of the project was highlighted by the presence of local
dignitaries and the press. I was particularly impressed by the involvement of
the parents who cooked a traditional lunch for us and even invited us into
their home to see a typical house.
There were many opportunities to taste local and delicious food, both
home-cooked for us by the parents or in restaurants.
Many trips and visits to museums, mosques and other educational or cultural
sites gave us an insight into Turkish customs and life. We laid a wreath at Ataturk’s mausoleum in
Ankara, which was an unforgettable experience for all involved, as was the
early morning visit to a Hamam. We had an opportunity to visit a calcite quarry
to see natural resources being mined and back at school we observed and
participated in some lessons as well as looking at completed work from the
project.
